Pennsylvania Man, 23, Charged With Raping Elderly Women at Senior Community

LANSDALE, PA — A 23-year-old Pennsylvania man accused of breaking into the homes of four women and sexually assaulting an elderly resident at a senior living community appeared in court Friday to face multiple rape and burglary charges.

John Vernon Gray of Telford stands charged with rape, sexual assault and burglary after prosecutors say he targeted three elderly residents at a Lansdale senior living facility while they slept, along with a fourth woman who lived within walking distance of his temporary residence. The case highlights the vulnerability of elderly victims and the critical role DNA evidence plays in prosecuting sexual assault cases, according to Montgomery County prosecutors who presented testimony from all four victims during Friday’s hearing.

The alleged attacks began on May 10, 2025, around 2:30 a.m., when an elderly woman woke to find Gray climbing through her bedroom window at the senior living community, according to a criminal complaint filed in Montgomery County. The woman told police she screamed, causing Gray to flee the scene immediately. Approximately 30 minutes later, Gray entered through the unlocked front door of another woman’s home at the same senior facility, investigators said. The second victim told police she found Gray standing in her bedroom and when she asked what he wanted, he responded, “I want you,” according to the criminal complaint. Police said Gray then sexually assaulted the woman, told her he loved her and begged her not to tell anyone before leaving her home.

Gray allegedly struck again six months later on November 8, 2025, targeting two more women in separate incidents approximately 30 minutes apart, according to investigators. The third victim, who also lived at the senior living facility, told police Gray entered her home and attempted to lift her nightgown before she was able to resist. The fourth attack occurred at the home of a woman who lived within walking distance of an apartment where Gray was staying temporarily, prosecutors said. Gray entered through a sliding glass door and began touching the woman, who screamed for her husband, causing Gray to flee the scene. “Our victims are incredible in this case,” Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Lauren Marvel said outside court. “They are bright and brave, compassionate, and very strong.”

While Gray’s defense attorney argued during Friday’s preliminary hearing that the victims could not identify their attacker’s face in the darkened bedrooms, prosecutors presented evidence they say definitively links Gray to the crimes. Cellphone data places Gray near each of the crime scenes during the times of the alleged attacks, according to investigators. Additionally, DNA evidence recovered from one victim’s nightgown tested positive as a match for Gray, prosecutors told the court. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office has not disclosed whether additional physical evidence was collected from other crime scenes. Gray faces multiple felony charges including rape in the first degree, sexual assault, burglary and criminal trespass. If convicted on all charges, Gray could face decades in prison under Pennsylvania sentencing guidelines for violent sexual offenses.

The Lansdale senior living community where three of the four attacks occurred has not been publicly identified by police, who cited victim privacy concerns and ongoing security assessments. Montgomery County records show the area contains several large senior residential facilities that house hundreds of elderly residents. Local police increased patrols around senior living facilities following Gray’s arrest, though officials have not disclosed whether additional security measures were implemented at the specific facility where the attacks occurred. The fourth victim lived in a private residence in the same general area, according to court documents. Pennsylvania State Police assisted Montgomery County detectives in the investigation, which involved analyzing cellphone tower data and coordinating DNA testing through the state crime laboratory.

Gray remains free on bail while awaiting a judge’s decision on whether sufficient evidence exists to hold him for trial, court officials said. The preliminary hearing will continue next week when additional evidence is expected to be presented to Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge William Carpenter. Prosecutors have indicated they plan to call additional witnesses and present more physical evidence linking Gray to the crimes. Gray’s defense attorney declined to comment on the case, citing the ongoing legal proceedings and the preliminary nature of Friday’s hearing. A formal arraignment has been scheduled for later this month if Judge Carpenter determines probable cause exists to proceed with a full trial.

Victim advocates say the case demonstrates both the importance of reporting sexual assaults and the challenges elderly victims face in coming forward after traumatic experiences. “When something happens, it can be incredibly overwhelming,” Assistant District Attorney Marvel said. “And it can be very scary to talk to anybody about it and a lot of victims will question whether it’s worth coming forward or worth saying anything. And what I would say is that it is always worth saying something because we will take it seriously.” The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office has assigned specialized prosecutors trained in handling cases involving elderly victims and sexual assault to oversee Gray’s prosecution. All four victims who testified Friday were accompanied by victim advocates during their court appearances.

Judge Carpenter is expected to announce his decision on whether to hold Gray for trial following next week’s continued preliminary hearing. If bound over for trial, Gray will be formally arraigned on all charges and a trial date will be set for later this year.
