PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. — Joseph Garrett Duggar, 31, a former star of the TLC reality show “19 Kids and Counting,” was arrested Tuesday on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior for allegedly molesting a 9-year-old girl during a 2020 family vacation in Florida.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that Duggar faces multiple felony charges including lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 years old and lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person 18 years or older. The arrest came after a police detective in Tontitown, Arkansas contacted Florida authorities about a report of sexual abuse. Duggar is currently being held in Washington County, Arkansas jail awaiting extradition to Bay County, Florida, where he will face the charges. The case marks another legal crisis for the Duggar family, whose reality television show was canceled in 2015 following sexual abuse allegations against Duggar’s older brother Josh.
According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, the now 14-year-old victim participated in a forensic interview where she disclosed several incidents involving Duggar that occurred during a family vacation in Panama City Beach when she was 9 years old. The victim told investigators that her family was staying at a home on Danny Drive when Duggar allegedly asked her to sit on his lap repeatedly and requested she sit next to him on a couch. “During this time, Duggar manipulated the victim’s underwear and grazed her genitals,” officials said in a statement. “Duggar would also continue to rub his hands on her thighs.” The victim said at one point during the vacation, Duggar covered them with a blanket before allegedly molesting her. The inappropriate contact continued throughout the trip until Duggar eventually apologized for his actions, according to the victim’s account.
The investigation began when the victim’s father confronted Duggar about the allegations on Tuesday, according to Bay County officials. When questioned by the father and Tontitown detectives, Duggar allegedly confessed to his actions. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office stated that Duggar admitted to the allegations when confronted. Authorities have not disclosed how the victim and Duggar are connected or provided details about their relationship. It remains unclear whether investigators believe there are additional victims. Law enforcement has not released a timeline for Duggar’s extradition to Florida, where he will face the formal charges. The specific circumstances that led to the victim coming forward after nearly six years have not been made public.
This arrest follows a pattern of legal troubles within the Duggar family that has brought repeated scrutiny to the Arkansas clan once held up as a model of Christian evangelicalism. In 2015, TLC canceled “19 Kids and Counting” after police reports revealed that Joseph’s older brother Josh Duggar had been investigated for molesting underage girls, including four of his sisters and a babysitter. Those 2006 allegations were not pursued due to the statute of limitations. The family’s troubles escalated dramatically in 2021 when Josh Duggar was arrested for sharing child pornography files depicting the sexual abuse of children, including toddlers. A federal court convicted Josh Duggar of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse materials, resulting in a 12-year prison sentence. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his conviction in 2023, and the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal in May 2025.
The Duggar family became household names through their TLC reality show, which documented the lives of parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and their 19 children. The show attracted millions of viewers and showcased the family’s conservative Christian lifestyle and adherence to strict religious principles. Joseph Duggar appeared regularly on the program alongside his siblings. In 2017, Joseph married Kendra Renee Caldwell, and the couple has four children together. They maintain a popular Instagram account with over 500,000 followers, sharing updates about their family life and parenting. The family’s reputation has been further examined in recent years, including in the 2023 Amazon Prime Video docuseries “Shiny Happy People,” which explored the Duggar family’s ties to an ultra-religious organization known as “The Institute of Basic Life Principles.”
Joseph Duggar is scheduled to be extradited to Bay County, Florida, where he will face formal arraignment on the felony charges. If convicted of lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 years old, he could face significant prison time under Florida law. A representative for the Duggar family did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the latest charges. The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not indicated whether they expect additional charges or victims to emerge.
