Texas Man Christopher Branch Charged With Kidnapping Ex-Girlfriend at Knifepoint

GAINESVILLE, Texas — A 39-year-old Gainesville man was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon after allegedly forcing his ex-girlfriend into his vehicle at knifepoint and driving her to a highway gas station where she escaped.

Christopher Ray Branch confronted the 45-year-old woman early Wednesday morning as she walked in the 1500 block of North Weaver Street, according to Gainesville Police. The incident marks the latest case in a string of domestic violence-related kidnappings across North Texas, highlighting ongoing concerns about violence against former intimate partners. Branch now faces first-degree felony charges that could result in decades in prison if convicted.

Police say Branch immediately assaulted the woman upon confronting her on the street, then displayed a knife in a threatening manner before forcing her into his vehicle. The attack occurred around dawn on Wednesday, according to preliminary investigation details released by authorities. Branch then drove westbound on Highway 82 with the victim in his car, traveling several miles from the initial confrontation site on North Weaver Street. Investigators have not yet revealed what prompted Branch to stop at the QuikTrip gas station off Highway 82, but that decision ultimately allowed the victim to escape and call for help.

The woman managed to flee from Branch’s vehicle once he stopped at the QuikTrip and immediately contacted police from inside the gas station, according to the department’s press release. She sustained several facial injuries during the initial assault and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for medical treatment. Gainesville Police responded to the call of an assault in progress at the gas station on West Highway 82, where they found the victim seeking help. Officers arrested Branch on charges of aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony under Texas law. The charge carries potential penalties of five to 99 years in prison and fines up to $10,000.

Branch and the victim had been in a previous relationship, though police have not disclosed the timeline of their past involvement or when it ended. Domestic violence cases involving former intimate partners represent a significant portion of kidnapping charges in Texas, according to state crime statistics. The North Weaver Street area where the initial confrontation occurred is primarily residential, with the assault taking place during early morning hours when few witnesses would have been present. Highway 82 serves as a major east-west corridor through North Texas, and the QuikTrip location where the victim escaped sits along a busy commercial strip that likely provided the visibility and safety she needed to seek help.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, with Gainesville Police asking anyone with information to contact the department at 940-668-7777 or through their Facebook page. Authorities have not indicated whether they are seeking additional charges or investigating other potential incidents involving Branch. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact the Crime Tip Hotline at 940-612-0000. The case will likely proceed through the Cooke County court system, where Branch will face arraignment on the felony charges. Court records do not yet show whether Branch has retained an attorney or when his initial court appearance is scheduled.

Branch remains in custody at the Cooke County Jail as the investigation continues. The victim’s current condition following her hospital treatment has not been disclosed by authorities, who cited privacy concerns in their ongoing investigation. Police emphasized that the quick thinking of the victim in escaping at the gas station and immediately contacting law enforcement prevented what could have been a more serious outcome. The department noted that domestic violence resources are available through local organizations for anyone experiencing similar situations.

The charges against Branch are pending, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. His next court appearance date has not yet been announced by Cooke County officials.
