GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — A 16-year-old boy was killed and another teenager wounded when a gunman opened fire outside a home in Garden Grove on March 3, with police investigating the shooting as gang-related.
Eduardo Achotla, 16, of Santa Ana, died from a gunshot wound to his upper torso after being rushed to a nearby hospital. The second victim, a 17-year-old boy, was also shot but remained in stable condition at the hospital. Garden Grove police responded to the 12500 block of Sandalwood Lane just before 8 p.m. that evening, finding both victims at the scene with gunshot wounds.
The two teenagers were standing outside a residence when at least one suspect approached on foot and opened fire before fleeing the area, according to Garden Grove Police Sergeant Nick Jensen. Officers arrived within minutes of receiving emergency calls about the shooting and immediately began providing medical aid to both victims. Paramedics transported Achotla to a trauma center, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The surviving victim was treated for his injuries and has been cooperating with investigators from his hospital bed.
Detectives have classified the shooting as potentially gang-related based on preliminary evidence gathered at the scene, though specific details about what led them to that conclusion have not been disclosed. The residential neighborhood where the shooting occurred sits in a quiet section of Garden Grove, with single-family homes lining Sandalwood Lane. Investigators spent several hours processing the crime scene, collecting shell casings and interviewing witnesses who heard the gunshots. Police have not released any description of the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting.
The Orange County coroner’s office officially identified Achotla as the deceased victim, marking another teenage homicide in Orange County this year. Garden Grove has experienced periodic gang violence over the past decade, with city officials and police working to implement intervention programs targeting at-risk youth. The shooting occurred in an area that has not historically seen high levels of violent crime, according to department crime statistics. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots followed by shouting before police sirens filled the usually quiet street.
Garden Grove Police Department detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting. No arrests have been made in connection with Achotla’s death, and police have not identified any suspects publicly. The department’s gang unit is assisting with the investigation given the suspected gang ties. Anyone with information about the March 3 shooting is asked to contact Garden Grove police at 714-741-5413.
The case remains under active investigation as detectives work to identify the shooter and determine the exact motive behind the attack. Funeral arrangements for Achotla are pending as his family grieves the loss of the teenager.
