Ohio Man Charged With Murder After Wife Found Stabbed 17 Times

LONDON, Ohio — Kyle Long, 35, faces murder charges after authorities determined his wife Rachel Long died from 17 stab wounds in what he initially claimed was a suicide at their Madison County home in October.

The case highlights how investigators pieced together evidence that contradicted Long’s account of finding his 32-year-old wife stabbing herself in their bedroom on State Route 187. Rachel Long, a mother of two who operated Pawfect Pups Grooming in downtown London, had been planning to leave her marriage and attend a concert with friends when she was killed on October 23, 2025. Long was arrested Wednesday during a traffic stop after the coroner officially changed the manner of death to homicide, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

Long’s story began to unravel during police interviews when investigators found inconsistencies between his initial 911 call and subsequent statements. In the emergency call obtained by WBNS, Long told dispatchers, “My wife just stabbed herself there’s no pulse, blood all over the place.” He claimed he was watching television in another room when he heard laughter followed by screams, then found Rachel stabbing herself in the face and neck. However, Long also called 911 once and hung up, then called again four minutes later, which authorities say conflicts with his original timeline. “Ever since we responded to the residence up there, investigated this as suspicious from the beginning, Mr. Long was the only person in the residence,” Madison County Sheriff John Swaney told WSYX.

The autopsy revealed crucial evidence that undermined Long’s suicide claim, according to law enforcement officials. Rachel Long suffered numerous “defensive-type wounds” on both hands, indicating she fought back against an attacker. The medical examiner documented a total of 17 sharp-force injuries across her body, far more extensive than what Long described witnessing. Long had allegedly told investigators he only saw his wife holding the knife with her right hand, but the defensive wounds on both hands suggested a prolonged struggle. Detectives also noted that Long’s answers during formal interviews conflicted with his initial statements to officers at the scene, where he had mentioned his wife was seeking a “separation from marriage.”

Text messages recovered from Rachel Long’s phone painted a picture of a woman looking forward to the future rather than contemplating suicide. On the day of her death, she had been texting with a friend about what clothes to wear to a concert they planned to attend together, according to the criminal complaint. The friend later confirmed to investigators that Rachel was excited about leaving her marriage and starting a new chapter as a single mother. “We knew that she was excited to leave,” the childhood friend told WBNS. “She was making new relationships and friendships and looking forward to a new adventure as a solo single mom.” The friend emphasized that suicide “was not Rachel, this is not the way she would have handled a situation in her life, just not her.”

Long appeared in Madison County court Friday for his arraignment, where Judge Sarah Martinez set bond at $1.5 million. He is currently detained at the Tri-County Regional Jail on one count of murder. His defense attorney, Sam Shamansky, maintains his client’s innocence and told WBNS that “it is a horribly tragic event in which he bears no responsibility, only sorrow.” Prosecutors have not announced whether they will seek additional charges or if they plan to pursue the death penalty. The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office said they are continuing to review evidence collected during the four-month investigation that preceded Long’s arrest.

Rachel Long’s death sent shockwaves through the small community of London, located 25 miles southwest of Columbus. As the owner and operator of Pawfect Pups Grooming, she had built relationships throughout the town caring for residents’ pets. “A lot of people got to firsthand experience her kindness, so it is nice to know she touched the community in so many ways by caring for their animals and getting to know everybody,” her friend said. The victim’s friend also expressed grief over the loss of someone she considered a kindred spirit in motherhood: “I am gonna miss experiencing her as a mother because we have children that are the same exact age, and a lot of the things I am going through, she was going through.”

The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies working to ensure all evidence aligned before filing charges. Sheriff Swaney emphasized the thoroughness of the process, stating that investigators “had to make sure—all agencies involved—we got those reports back, and put all the evidence back, and that they all align.” Long’s next court appearance has not yet been scheduled, and the case is expected to proceed through the Madison County court system in the coming months.
