LOS GATOS, Calif. — A 51-year-old California woman was convicted Wednesday of 48 criminal charges for hosting alcohol-fueled parties where prosecutors said she coordinated sexual assaults among teenagers, many of whom were 14 and 15 years old.
Shannon O’Connor, dubbed the “Party Mom” by authorities, was found guilty of multiple felonies including two counts of sexual penetration, 13 counts of child endangerment, and one count of dissuading a witness. The convictions stem from parties held at her $4.7 million Los Gatos mansion between 2020 and 2021, where she provided Fireball whiskey, vodka, and condoms to underage students from Los Gatos High School, where two of her sons were enrolled. Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said O’Connor not only failed to protect children but actively endangered them and tried to silence victims.
Prosecutors said O’Connor used Snapchat and text messages to lure teenagers to her home in the middle of the night, warning them not to tell their parents or police about the parties or she could go to jail. At one New Year’s Eve party with approximately five 14-year-olds, authorities said O’Connor watched and laughed as a drunk teenager sexually battered a young girl in bed. In another incident, she allegedly handed a teenager a condom and pushed him into a room with an intoxicated minor. According to court documents, one 14-year-old victim later confronted O’Connor, asking “Why did you leave me in there with him? Like why did you like do that? Like you knew like what he was going to do to me.”
The sexual penetration convictions were the most serious charges, as prosecutors argued that O’Connor sexually assaulted two girls by enabling them to become so intoxicated they could not legally consent. Court records show O’Connor also brought a drunk teenage boy into a bedroom where an intoxicated 14-year-old girl was lying in bed. When O’Connor suspected one teen was telling outsiders about her secret parties, she threatened to spread rumors about the girl and persuaded other teens to harass her, according to prosecutors. The victim suffered mental and emotional turmoil, including panic attacks, and subsequently needed to sleep in her parents’ bedroom. O’Connor also discouraged teens from seeking medical assistance when partygoers passed out in their own vomit.
O’Connor had been known as “the cool mom” since her older son was in middle school and had raised eyebrows among some parents for her unusual closeness with her sons’ friends, according to court documents. The parties took place at her Los Gatos mansion, where she supplied excessive amounts of alcohol to minors to the point where they would vomit, be unable to stand, and fall unconscious. In one dangerous incident, she allowed a minor to drive her SUV in the Los Gatos High School parking lot while two other teens held onto the back of the vehicle. One teenager fell off and was knocked unconscious. Prosecutors said O’Connor pressured teen girls to engage in sexual acts with boys, including her then-15-year-old son, and if girls did not consent, she would allegedly pull them aside for private conversations until they went into a room with a boy.
O’Connor was arrested at her home in Ada County, Idaho, in October 2021 and extradited to the Santa Clara County Jail, where she has remained in custody for over four years. She was also known by the name Shannon Bruga during the time period of the alleged crimes. The case began when brave victims came forward to authorities to report the inappropriate parties and sexual assaults that occurred at O’Connor’s residence. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 26 in Santa Clara County Superior Court, where she faces more than 30 years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender. In 2022, O’Connor was also arrested on separate sex crime allegations after being accused of sexually touching a 55-year-old man.
After the verdicts were read Wednesday, the parent of one victim called O’Connor a “predator,” a “stalker,” a “groomer,” and a “harasser,” who was “very good at what she did,” according to local media reports. District Attorney Rosen praised the victims and their families for their courage during the lengthy legal process. “It was a long wait. It was a long trial. There was a lot of hardship and pain, and suffering. But with the jury’s verdict today, there is now justice,” Rosen said outside the courthouse. “It’s important to recognize the victims who testified and their families, their parents who supported them during this very difficult ordeal. This case does not happen if the children do not come forward and stop what this defendant was doing.”
O’Connor remains in custody at the Santa Clara County Jail awaiting sentencing on March 26. The conviction represents the culmination of a case that began over four years ago when teenage victims found the courage to report the disturbing activities at the Los Gatos mansion to authorities.
