22-Year-Old Ohio Man Sentenced to 8-10 Years for Fatal Shooting of Girlfriend Riley Jones

BEDFORD, OH – A 22-year-old Ohio man received an 8 to 10½ year prison sentence this week after pleading guilty to fatally shooting his girlfriend in an AutoZone parking lot last August.

Darien Hobley was sentenced Tuesday by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Hollie Gallagher following his February 2nd guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence charges. The charges stemmed from the August 4, 2025 shooting death of his girlfriend, 20-year-old Riley Jones.

According to court testimony reported by WKYC, surveillance cameras captured the incident that unfolded in the Bedford AutoZone parking lot. Jones had followed Hobley to the location in her vehicle and blocked his car before getting out, according to Judge Gallagher’s account of the events.

“The door opens, and she leans in the car. And within seconds, a shot’s fired and she’s on the ground,” Gallagher said, describing how Jones approached Hobley’s driver-side door while appearing “visibly upset.”

Jones suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. A witness who called 911 reported seeing Hobley “standing there over [Jones] with the gun” after the shooting, according to Fox affiliate WJW.

During his sentencing hearing, Hobley told the court that Jones “reached for” his gun and he “got scared.” He apologized to Jones’ family and stated he “didn’t want to hurt her.”

“I tried to help, but I didn’t know what to do. And everything was so overwhelming. I just walked away. I just needed a new scenery,” Hobley said in court.

Before imposing the sentence, Judge Gallagher commented on the case, saying, “This is why people Mr. Hobley’s age shouldn’t have a weapon. They are not operating on all cylinders yet. This is a really tragic, tragic case. It’s just awful.”

In addition to the prison term, Hobley will serve two years of parole upon his release.
