RALEIGH, NC – A North Carolina man faces multiple charges after his speeding pickup truck struck and killed a motorist who was standing beside his vehicle during a traffic investigation on Interstate 440.
Jack Neville was driving a white 2015 Chevrolet Silverado when he crashed into a 2007 Pontiac Vibe around 9:40 p.m. Friday near the Glen Eden Drive overpass, according to Raleigh police investigators.
The fatal collision occurred while officers and a towing company were documenting an earlier multi-vehicle crash on the westbound lanes of I-440. All vehicles from the initial incident had been moved to the shoulder of the highway.
Police say Neville was traveling at excessive speed when his truck struck the rear left corner of the Pontiac Vibe. The impact caused the Pontiac to hit Eduardo Valdez, who was standing next to his vehicle that had been involved in the original collision.
Valdez suffered serious injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. All westbound lanes of the interstate were shut down following the incident.
Authorities charged Neville with misdemeanor death by vehicle, exceeding a safe speed for conditions, and failure to reduce speed. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by motorists and emergency responders working at roadside accident scenes. Police have not released additional details about the case.
