Miami-Dade Deputies Bust 22 Suspects in Major Vehicle Registration Fraud Scheme

MIAMI, FL – Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 22 people following a six-month investigation into an elaborate vehicle tag fraud operation dubbed “Operation Ghost Writers,” authorities announced.

The coordinated bust targeted suspects allegedly involved in fraudulent vehicle registration schemes that have cost the state thousands of dollars in lost revenue and created potential safety hazards on Florida roads.

Sheriff’s investigators spent half a year building cases against the alleged fraud ring members, gathering evidence of their involvement in creating and distributing fake vehicle tags and registration documents.

The operation’s name, “Ghost Writers,” refers to the suspects’ alleged method of creating fraudulent paperwork that allowed vehicles to appear legally registered when they were not, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

Vehicle tag fraud typically involves creating fake registration documents, altering existing tags, or using stolen registration information to avoid paying proper fees and taxes required for legal vehicle registration.

The investigation represents one of the larger vehicle fraud busts in recent Miami-Dade County history, with nearly two dozen suspects now facing potential charges related to document fraud and theft.

Deputies have not yet released the identities of all suspects arrested or the specific charges each individual faces. The investigation may continue as authorities determine whether additional suspects were involved in the alleged fraud scheme.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office conducted the operation as part of ongoing efforts to combat document fraud that affects both state revenue and public safety on county roads.
