Pennsylvania Man Loses $34,000 in AI-Generated Car Scam Linked to Romanian Suspect

LOWER SOUTHAMPTON, PA – A Pennsylvania man lost $34,000 to an elaborate international car scam that used artificial intelligence-generated images and fake websites to sell a non-existent 1969 Camaro, according to local police investigating the fraud.

Lower Southampton Township police have issued an arrest warrant for Ion Cojocaru, 32, who authorities believe orchestrated the scheme from Romania while using shell companies registered in the United States. Interpol is assisting with the international investigation.

The victim, who requested anonymity, told investigators the scammer provided convincing documentation over several days of communication, including AI-generated photos showing the classic car with the buyer’s name written on paper placed on the hood along with the current date.

“It was unbelievable to the point where I said he had my name on the hood of the car with a white piece of paper and the date. And the car was already tied down to the trailer,” the victim said.

Police Chief Ted Krimmel said investigators believe the entire operation was fraudulent, with the advertised vehicle likely never existing. The suspect used wire transfers to collect payment, making recovery of the funds extremely difficult.

“He knew enough to come here, set up the scam, leave the country, and do everything from a computer. We’ve actually been in touch with him via email. He knows we’re looking for him,” Krimmel said.

The victim reported seeing similar vehicle listings posted online using the same methods, suggesting the scam may be ongoing with additional targets. Police believe there are likely other victims who have not yet come forward.

“I would love them to at least get him because it’s not just me. I know there’s many other people out there that he’s done this to,” the victim said, emphasizing his desire for accountability over financial recovery.

Consumer protection experts recommend using verified platforms for high-value online purchases, thoroughly researching sellers, and avoiding wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency payments that are difficult to trace or recover.

The case highlights the growing sophistication of international fraud schemes that exploit advancing AI technology to create convincing fake documentation and imagery.
