VASS, NC – A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Ohio for allegedly murdering his ex-girlfriend and an Army soldier at a Moore County residence Saturday morning, authorities said.
Caleb Hayden Fosnaugh faces two counts of murder and breaking and entering charges in connection with the deaths of 21-year-old Katerina Tovmash and 28-year-old Matthew Wade at a home on Daphne Lane in the Woodlake community.
Moore County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the shooting report at 7:45 a.m. Saturday and discovered both victims dead inside the residence. Fosnaugh had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, according to the sheriff’s office.
Wade was an active duty Army soldier stationed at Fort Bragg and originally from Mississippi. Tovmash was a Ukrainian refugee who had been caring for her younger sisters, officials said.
Investigators determined Fosnaugh was Tovmash’s former boyfriend and issued warrants for his arrest. He was located and taken into custody in Ohio later Saturday following coordination between Moore County investigators and Ohio authorities.
“This is a tragic and senseless loss of life. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims during this difficult time,” Sheriff Ronnie Fields said in a statement. “We are grateful for the swift coordination and assistance from our law enforcement partners in bringing this individual into custody.”
The Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted in the investigation and arrest.
Authorities described the incident as isolated, stating all parties involved knew each other and there was no ongoing threat to the Woodlake community. The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence.
