NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FL – A 22-year-old North Miami Beach man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly fleeing police in a high-speed chase that ended in a violent crash, leaving an innocent woman hospitalized with serious injuries.
Omarian Anderson appeared in Miami-Dade bond court Friday on charges including fleeing and eluding police, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of a weapon while committing an offense, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of cannabis, and driving while his license was suspended.
The incident began when a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop on Anderson’s white BMW for suspected involvement in a burglary. Instead of stopping, Anderson allegedly sped away, leading deputies on a chase through northwest Miami-Dade.
Security camera footage captured the moment Anderson’s BMW crashed into a vehicle driven by Zulemo Marrero, who had just finished grocery shopping at Walmart. The impact caused Marrero’s car to flip and spin before coming to rest on a median strip at the intersection of N.W. 27th Avenue and N.W. 95th Street.
Marrero was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with broken ribs and severe bruising. Her daughter, Milagros Cruz, said her mother remains conscious but in significant pain and has little memory of the crash.
“She doesn’t remember much. She does remember driving and all of a sudden getting pulled out of the car by the ambulance,” Cruz told reporters. “Thank God she is alive.”
Sheriff’s deputies recovered multiple weapons from Anderson’s vehicle following the crash, including an AK-style pistol, a handgun, and ammunition, according to court documents.
A judge found probable cause for all charges and set Anderson’s bond at $20,500. Upon release, he will be required to wear a GPS monitoring device.
Cruz said her mother was simply “in the wrong place at the wrong time” when the chase entered the busy intersection. Hospital officials reported Friday that Marrero’s condition has improved, though she continues to undergo multiple medical tests and scans.
