VERO BEACH, FL – A Florida man who reportedly confessed to killing his 76-year-old grandmother remains in jail — but not on murder charges — as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances of the deadly attack.
Nicholas Ivey was taken into custody after deputies with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check on Monday and found the body of Patricia Dibella in her apartment bed. According to authorities, Ivey was already outside the residence when officers arrived and “spontaneously” admitted to killing her.
Ivey told investigators that an altercation broke out between him and his grandmother, during which he attacked and killed her. After the assault, Ivey allegedly moved Dibella’s body to her bed, cleaned the apartment, and washed his blood-stained clothing before putting it back on, according to the sheriff’s office.
The welfare check was initiated after Ivey’s father called 911. Ivey had reportedly told his father that his grandmother was dead, prompting the emergency call.
Despite the confession, Ivey has not been formally charged with murder. He is currently being held on $400,000 bond on unrelated charges of grand theft auto, identity theft, and credit card fraud. A spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said the charges “reflect the facts known at the time of arrest” and that the murder investigation remains “ongoing.”
The decision not to immediately file homicide charges has drawn scrutiny, though officials say the case is still being actively investigated. Prosecutors are expected to review the evidence before determining what additional charges may be filed.
Patricia Dibella, 76, was described by neighbors as a quiet woman who lived alone in the Indian River County apartment. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack beyond what Ivey told investigators.
Ivey remains in the Indian River County Jail. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
