HOUSTON, TX – A man who allegedly exposed himself to passengers on a Houston light rail train is dead after pulling a knife on two sheriff’s deputies who tried to arrest him, slashing one officer before both opened fire.
The fatal confrontation occurred around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Northline Transit Center in the 8000 block of Fulton Street, where Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies were working security detail.
Deputies responded after receiving reports that a man was exposing himself to passengers aboard a METRORail train. When they approached to make an arrest, things turned violent.
“They went to interview that male and arrest him for exposing himself to people on the train, there was a fight, during that fight one of those deputies was cut on the arm,” Lt. Larry Crowson with the Houston Police Department explained.
The suspect had armed himself with a knife and slashed one deputy during the scuffle. Both deputies, a 33-year-old with nine years of service and a 32-year-old with seven years on the force, discharged their weapons.
The injured deputy was transported to a hospital with a non-life-threatening laceration to his arm. The suspect was also rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The identity of the deceased has not been released. Authorities have not disclosed whether he had any prior criminal history or mental health issues that may have contributed to the incident.
The shooting remains under investigation. Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending review, which is standard procedure following officer-involved shootings.
