Convicted ‘Starry Night Murderer’ Back Behind Bars After Early Prison Release and New Arrests

PORTLAND, OR – A man dubbed the “Starry Night Murderer” for killing an employee at his Portland concert hall in 1990 is back in jail after allegedly violating parole and picking up new domestic violence charges, years after his early release from prison.

Larry Hurwitz was arrested last week in Sandy, Oregon, on allegations of harassment and fourth-degree assault. He’s being held in Clackamas County Jail on a parole violation with bail set at $500,000.

Hurwitz earned his notorious nickname after murdering Tim Moreau, a 21-year-old employee at the Starry Night Concert Hall that Hurwitz operated in northwest Portland. Prosecutors said Hurwitz killed Moreau to cover up a counterfeit ticket scheme. Moreau’s body was never recovered.

Hurwitz entered a no-contest plea to the murder charge and was sentenced in 2000 to 11 years in prison. However, he was released early in 2008 and placed on lifetime post-prison supervision.

His freedom hasn’t been trouble-free. In 2019, Hurwitz was arrested in Huntington Beach, California, on drug trafficking charges. Police found four kilos of cocaine and $320,000 in cash. His parole was revoked that August, and he served a 180-day sanction before being released again.

Now he’s facing new charges that could send him back to prison for much longer. A court appearance is scheduled for February 4, with a trial date set for March 19.

The Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office declined to comment on specifics of the current case, citing the ongoing investigation.

Hurwitz remains under lifetime supervision for the 1990 murder conviction, meaning any violation can result in his return to custody.
