Mark Jones, Director of Horror Cult Classic ‘Leprechaun,’ Dies at 72

LOS ANGELES, CA – Mark Jones, the filmmaker who created one of horror cinema’s most enduring villains when he wrote and directed the original “Leprechaun” in 1993, has passed away. He was 72.

Jones carved out a unique niche in Hollywood with his ability to blend horror and dark comedy, a skill on full display in the film that would become his signature work. “Leprechaun” starred Warwick Davis as a murderous Irish fairy hunting down anyone who stole his pot of gold, and the movie launched a franchise that’s still producing sequels more than three decades later.

The original film also served as an early role for Jennifer Aniston, who appeared just a year before landing her star-making turn on “Friends.” While Aniston has jokingly distanced herself from the B-movie over the years, the film developed a devoted cult following that appreciated its campy charm.

Jones followed up “Leprechaun” with “Rumpelstiltskin” in 1995, another horror take on a folklore character. The film featured the fairy tale villain terrorizing a woman and her baby in modern-day Los Angeles, continuing Jones’ interest in bringing mythical creatures into contemporary settings.

Throughout his career, Jones worked steadily in both film and television, though none of his other projects achieved the lasting cultural impact of his killer leprechaun creation. The character he conceived has appeared in eight films to date, with Davis reprising the role multiple times.

The “Leprechaun” franchise became a fixture of late-night cable television and video store horror sections throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Its success demonstrated an audience appetite for horror that didn’t take itself too seriously, paving the way for other comedic fright films.

Jones’ contribution to the genre won’t be forgotten by fans who grew up watching his gold-obsessed villain terrorize unlucky victims. The franchise he started continues to find new audiences on streaming platforms.
