Springfield Pays Record $14 Million to Settle Child Sex Abuse Lawsuits Against Former Teacher

SPRINGFIELD, MA – The City of Springfield has agreed to pay more than $14 million to settle two federal lawsuits filed by former students who say a middle school teacher repeatedly raped them – marking the largest child sex abuse settlement in Massachusetts history.

The settlements, totaling $14.8 million, stem from accusations against Robert Gayle, who taught at STEM Middle Academy. Two seventh-grade students, identified in court documents only as “Susie Doe,” alleged that Gayle groomed and sexually abused them over an extended period.

One victim reported being “repeatedly raped over the course of nearly two years” inside school classrooms. The abuse allegedly happened during school hours, in a building where the girl should have been safe.

Court documents paint a disturbing picture of how Gayle allegedly operated. He reportedly targeted vulnerable students who had experienced family losses, gave special treatment to certain female students, and encouraged them to stay after class or during lunch periods. The complaints also allege he sent sexually explicit photos and drove at least one student home while soliciting explicit messages.

Perhaps most troubling are the allegations that school officials knew something was wrong and did nothing. According to the lawsuits, then-Principal Luis Martinez and a school counselor ignored multiple warnings about Gayle’s behavior. Another teacher reportedly raised concerns about Gayle providing rides home to students, but administrators allegedly looked the other way.

Martinez has since left Springfield Public Schools and now works as a principal in South Hadley.

City Solicitor Steve Buoniconti said the massive settlement reflects the city’s concerns about liability in the case. He emphasized that staff have since received new training on recognizing inappropriate relationships between employees and students.

Gayle was arrested in May 2023 and faces multiple charges of child rape and indecent assault involving three victims. His criminal cases remain pending in Hampden Superior Court.

The victims’ attorneys – Laura Mangini, Robert DiTusa, and Alexander Sneirson – negotiated the record-breaking settlements on behalf of their clients.
