NEW YORK, NY – Fetty Wap is a free man. The rapper behind the massive 2015 hit “Trap Queen” was released from federal prison this week after serving roughly half of his six-year sentence for running drugs across state lines.
The 34-year-old artist, whose real name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, confirmed his freedom with a simple Instagram Story post: “Home.” His representative later provided a statement saying he’s grateful for the support he received while locked up.
“I want to thank my family, friends, and fans for the love, prayers, and continued support – it truly means everything to me,” Fetty said in the statement.
The New Jersey native got caught up in a drug trafficking operation that shipped narcotics from the West Coast to buyers in New Jersey and Long Island. Federal agents arrested him back in October 2021, and he eventually pleaded guilty in August 2022. A judge handed down the six-year sentence in May 2023, along with five years of supervised release.
Fetty served his time at a low-security federal facility in Sandstone, Minnesota. Even from behind bars, he managed to stay connected to his music, dropping a track called “Forever (71943509)” in May 2025 and appearing on Doe Boy’s song “Lil Sexy” the following month.
Now that he’s out, Fetty says he’s planning to focus on giving back. He mentioned wanting to support at-risk youth through his foundation and community programs, with an emphasis on education, early technology skills, and vision care for students.
The rapper rose to fame seemingly overnight when “Trap Queen” exploded in 2015, eventually hitting number two on the Billboard Hot 100. He followed it up with other hits like “My Way” and “679,” establishing himself as one of hip-hop’s breakout stars that year.
