LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – A 15-year-old boy has been charged as an adult with murder after police say he fatally shot an Uber driver during a carjacking in the Atlanta metropolitan area, then dumped the victim’s body in the middle of a street.
The Lawrenceville Police Department responded to a call shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday reporting a person lying in the roadway. Officers arrived to find a 58-year-old man dead from at least one gunshot wound.
Investigators quickly determined the victim was an Uber driver whose vehicle had been stolen during the fatal encounter.
Ring doorbell footage from the area proved crucial to cracking the case. The video revealed “a black SUV stopping in the roadway, dropping off the victim, and then leaving the area,” according to police. The vehicle belonged to the victim.
By early afternoon, detectives had tracked the stolen SUV to a residence in Lilburn, approximately 10 miles from where the body was discovered. The teenage suspect was taken into custody without incident.
Despite his age, the 15-year-old has been charged as an adult with murder, reflecting the severity of the allegations. His name has not been released due to his juvenile status.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.
The case highlights the dangers rideshare drivers face while working, particularly during overnight hours when they may pick up unknown passengers in isolated locations.
Police said the investigation is ongoing as they work to determine whether additional individuals were involved in the crime.
