Pennsylvania Nursing Home Explosion Kills 2, Hospitalizes 19 as Building Partially Collapses

BRISTOL, PA – A powerful explosion tore through a Pennsylvania nursing home Tuesday afternoon, causing a partial building collapse that killed two people and sent nineteen others to area hospitals as first responders pulled survivors from the rubble.

The blast at Silver Lake Nursing Home in Bristol Township, Bucks County, occurred around 2:15 p.m., reducing parts of the first floor to debris and trapping residents inside the damaged structure.

Fire officials described significant structural damage, with portions of the building collapsing into the basement. One staff member and one resident were confirmed dead. Among the nineteen hospitalized, at least one person remained in critical condition.

A third person was initially feared dead but was resuscitated at the hospital, bringing some relief to what had been an even grimmer scene.

Firefighters and medical crews from multiple jurisdictions arrived within minutes of the first 911 calls. Rescuers worked frantically to reach trapped residents, pulling survivors through doors, windows, stairwells, and even an elevator shaft. Two people were extricated from the collapsed basement area.

Then came a second explosion.

After crews detected a strong gas odor permeating the building, emergency personnel evacuated everyone from the structure. Within about 30 seconds of clearing out, another blast rocked the facility, igniting a fire that responders were able to contain before it spread further.

PECO, the local utility company, said it remains unclear whether their equipment or natural gas played a role in the disaster. Workers shut off both gas and electric service to the building following the initial explosion.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro praised the heroic response of first responders who put themselves at risk to save lives.

“This is the Pennsylvania way: neighbors helping neighbors in a moment of need,” the governor said.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
