PACOIMA, CA – A violent collision between a car and semi-truck left one person dead and shut down multiple lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway early Sunday morning as emergency crews worked to clear the fiery wreckage.
The crash occurred around 3:45 a.m. near Osbourne Street in Pacoima when the passenger vehicle and commercial truck collided for reasons that remain under investigation. At least one of the vehicles caught fire following the impact.
California Highway Patrol officers responding to the scene confirmed one fatality but did not immediately clarify whether the deceased was traveling in the car or the semi-truck. The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The severity of the crash forced authorities to close several lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway while investigators documented the scene and crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles. The freeway reopened around 8:15 a.m., roughly four and a half hours after the collision.
Details about what caused the crash remain limited. Investigators have not indicated whether speed, impairment, or mechanical failure may have played a role in the deadly collision.
The 5 Freeway through the San Fernando Valley carries heavy commercial truck traffic connecting Los Angeles to destinations throughout California and beyond. Fatal crashes involving semi-trucks often result in more severe outcomes due to the size and weight differential between commercial vehicles and passenger cars.
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information that could help investigators is encouraged to contact authorities.
