Seven Children Ages 10 to 13 Charged With Battery After Viral Video Shows Attack on Mother

CHICAGO, IL – Seven children between the ages of 10 and 13 are facing battery charges after a disturbing viral video captured them allegedly attacking a 33-year-old mother and her 9-year-old son who tried to protect her on a Chicago street.

The brutal assault occurred November 17 in the South Deering neighborhood near Orville T. Bright Elementary School. The footage, which spread rapidly across social media, showed the group of juveniles swarming the mother while her young son attempted to shield her from the blows.

Chicago police confirmed the charges on December 21 against all seven minors involved: three 10-year-old boys, one 10-year-old girl, one 11-year-old girl, one 12-year-old boy, and one 13-year-old girl. Each faces battery charges causing bodily harm.

Both victims were hospitalized at Trinity Hospital in serious condition following the attack. The mother suffered significant injuries, with family members saying “she’s never endured such pain.”

Her 9-year-old son has received recognition from the community for his bravery in trying to defend his mother against the group of attackers, despite being overwhelmed and injured himself.

All seven juvenile suspects have been released from custody with referrals to counseling services. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to understand what prompted the violent attack.

The case has sparked outrage in Chicago and beyond, raising questions about youth violence and what circumstances could lead children as young as 10 to participate in such a brutal assault. Local rapper Lil Zay Osama was among those who publicly supported the victims following the incident.

School officials have not commented on whether any of the charged juveniles were students at the nearby elementary school.
