Former New York Prison Guard Sentenced to Life for Brutal Murder of Handcuffed Inmate

MARCY, NY – A former New York state corrections officer has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering a handcuffed Black inmate in a brutal beating captured on body camera footage that shocked the nation and prompted sweeping prison reforms.

David Kingsley, 45, received a 25-years-to-life sentence for his murder conviction Friday, with an additional 25-year sentence for first-degree manslaughter running consecutively. He is the only guard among six indicted in the case to be convicted of murder.

The victim, Robert Brooks, 43, died on December 9, 2024, after Kingsley and other officers attacked him at Marcy Correctional Facility, approximately 180 miles northwest of New York City. Body camera footage showed Kingsley holding Brooks by the neck and lifting him as multiple guards surrounded the handcuffed man.

At sentencing, Kingsley apologized to Brooks’ family for his role in what he called “senseless” actions that led to the inmate’s death. The apology did little to comfort relatives who watched their loved one beaten to death on video.

Robert Brooks Jr., the victim’s son, expressed hope the conviction would prevent similar tragedies. “Justice being served represents progress toward healing,” said Jared Ricks, Brooks’ brother.

Five other guards involved in the attack have pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and await sentencing. Their cooperation with prosecutors helped build the case against Kingsley as the primary aggressor.

Hours after the sentencing, Governor Kathy Hochul announced significant prison reforms including mandatory camera installation in all state facilities and requirements for prompt video release to investigators in cases involving deaths in custody.

The reforms come too late for Brooks but may protect future inmates from similar brutality behind bars.
