KEARNY, NJ – A Hudson County man has been charged with murder and arson after allegedly shooting a victim with an arrow before barricading himself inside a home for hours while a fire raged, forcing the evacuation of at least four neighboring residences.
Oscar Feijoo of Kearny was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after the dramatic standoff that began when police responded to reports of an injured man near the intersection of Kearny and Johnston avenues. Officers discovered Pablo Criollo, 45, of Harrison suffering from an arrow wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities traced the attack to Feijoo’s residence on Kearny Avenue, where the suspect had locked himself inside. SWAT teams surrounded the home as negotiators attempted to convince him to surrender peacefully.
During the overnight standoff, a fire broke out inside the residence, adding another layer of danger to the already volatile situation. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze while keeping a safe distance from the armed suspect. At least four neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution.
The tense situation finally ended Sunday afternoon when Feijoo emerged from the burning structure. “The male exited the home armed with knives,” prosecutors stated. “He was taken into custody shortly thereafter.”
Feijoo now faces charges of murder, aggravated arson, and criminal weapons possession. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues. The relationship between the suspect and victim remains unclear, and authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack.
Law enforcement maintained a heavy presence in the area through Monday as investigators processed the crime scene and the burned residence.
