FORT MOHAVE, AZ – An 8-year-old boy faces multiple felony charges after allegedly bringing a loaded handgun to his elementary school, threatening a teacher while holding the weapon, and passing it off to another student.
The alarming incident unfolded just before noon Monday at Fort Mohave Elementary School in Mohave County. According to the sheriff’s office, the young student displayed the firearm to several classmates before the situation escalated dramatically.
The boy threatened one of his teachers while holding the gun, investigators said. He then handed the weapon to another student before school staff could intervene.
A classmate who witnessed what was happening alerted the principal, setting off a rapid response. Staff members managed to disarm the child and remove him from the classroom before law enforcement arrived at the scene.
The 8-year-old now faces an array of felony charges including misconduct involving weapons, disorderly conduct, minor in possession of a firearm, interfering with an educational institution, and threatening and intimidating.
Several critical questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not disclosed how the child obtained the loaded firearm or who it belongs to. It’s also unclear whether the second student who briefly possessed the weapon will face any consequences.
School district officials praised the student who reported the incident for potentially preventing a tragedy.
“We take any incident involving a weapon on campus extremely seriously,” the district said in a statement, commending the young witness for having the courage to speak up.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to an elementary school student having access to a loaded gun. Parents of students at the school have been notified, and counseling services are being made available.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about children gaining access to unsecured firearms. Studies consistently show that most school shootings and gun accidents involving minors occur when weapons are not properly stored away from children.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
