8-Year-Old Stabs Grandmother to Stop Knife Attack on Mother

OAKLEAF, FL – An 8-year-old Florida girl stabbed her estranged grandmother with a kitchen knife Monday after the woman allegedly broke into their home and attacked the child’s mother with a serrated utility blade.

The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. Monday in the 600 block of Reese Avenue in Oakleaf, a community in Clay County. Deputies from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a disturbance at the residence.

According to authorities, Serpil Adams, 62, entered her estranged daughter’s home through an unlocked door without permission. Once inside, Adams allegedly attacked her daughter with a serrated utility knife.

The victim’s 8-year-old daughter witnessed the attack and ran to the kitchen, where she grabbed a knife from the residence. The child then stabbed her grandmother in the upper arm in an apparent effort to protect her mother.

The stabbing caused Adams to retreat and flee the scene. Authorities report that both the victim and her child escaped the incident without physical injuries.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office later located Adams at a friend’s residence, where she was taken into custody without incident. Adams was transported to the Clay County Jail.

Adams has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and is being held on a bond of $500,003. The unusually specific bond amount reflects the severity of the charge and potential flight risk assessment.

Investigators have not released details about the nature of the estrangement between Adams and her daughter, or what may have precipitated Monday’s violent encounter. The case remains under active investigation by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities have not indicated whether the 8-year-old child will face any charges related to the stabbing. Under Florida law, actions taken in defense of another person may be considered justified if the defender reasonably believed the other person was in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.

The Florida Department of Children and Families has not commented on whether the agency is involved in assessing the welfare of the child following the traumatic incident.

Clay County authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.

No court date has been set for Adams’ arraignment on the attempted murder charge.
