CANARSIE, NY – Authorities are investigating after a fetus was found concealed in a black bag near a New York City Housing Authority complex in Brooklyn Thursday morning.
The discovery was made behind the NYCHA complex at 1580 East 102nd Street shortly after 11 a.m., according to sources. The remains were found hidden under leaves in the area behind the residential building.
Police initially reported the remains as those of a full-term baby. Investigators later clarified the remains were those of a fetus, though specific gestational details have not been released pending medical examination.
The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the age of the fetus and potential cause of death. Results of the examination could take several weeks as forensic experts analyze the remains.
Detectives are canvassing the Canarsie neighborhood for surveillance footage that might provide clues about how the remains came to be at the location. Investigators are also interviewing residents of the housing complex.
No arrests have been made in connection with the case. Police have not identified any suspects or persons of interest as the investigation continues.
Authorities are examining whether the discovery may be connected to any missing persons reports or hospital records in the area. Investigators are also reviewing recent emergency calls that might be relevant to the case.
The housing complex where the remains were found serves hundreds of families in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn. NYCHA officials are cooperating with the police investigation.
Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the New York Police Department’s Crime Stoppers hotline. Tips can be provided anonymously.
