Ex-Houston Police Captain Indicted on Federal Child Sex Assault Charges

HOUSTON, TX – A former Houston police captain with more than three decades of service was indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple child sexual assault charges, appearing in court Friday to face allegations of repeated abuse spanning several years.

Daryn Blake Edwards, 59, was indicted Tuesday on federal charges including two counts of coercion and enticement of a minor, two counts of sexual exploitation of children, and one count of possession of child pornography. The former captain made his initial court appearance Friday.

The charges carry severe potential penalties. Each count of coercion and enticement carries a potential life sentence, while the sexual exploitation charges each carry up to 20 years in federal prison. The child pornography possession charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Edwards also faces potential fines of $250,000.

According to court documents, Edwards subjected a victim to repeated sexual abuse beginning when the child was in elementary school. The victim reported to authorities that Edwards raped her between 85 and 100 times, with the assaults escalating in frequency over the past year.

Federal prosecutors allege Edwards engaged in a pattern of exploitation that included sending sexually explicit photographs via social media and requesting explicit images from the victim in exchange for payment. Court documents indicate Edwards saved images from Snapchat, which triggered notifications to the victim.

Investigators say Edwards allegedly threatened to “ruin her life” by revealing a secret photo album he maintained. Authorities also discovered Edwards had used hidden cameras to capture images of the victim.

Edwards was initially arrested in February 2025 at his Galveston County home on child pornography charges. The League City Police Department subsequently added state charges for aggravated sexual assault and sexual performance of a child before the federal grand jury handed down the indictment.

Edwards served 32 years with the Houston Police Department, rising to the rank of captain before his arrest earlier this year. The department has not released details about when Edwards left the force or the circumstances of his departure.

The case remains under investigation by federal authorities and the League City Police Department. Federal prosecutors are handling the case through the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.

If convicted on all counts, Edwards faces the possibility of life in federal prison. No trial date has been set.
