BIRMINGHAM, AL – A convicted felon has been charged with murder after police say he fatally shot his girlfriend and then falsely claimed an intruder was responsible for her death.
Jeffrey Rogers, 25, called 911 on Saturday claiming someone had attempted to break into his Pratt City home and that he shot the person in self-defense. When West Precinct officers arrived at the residence on 10th Street, they found a different story.
Bria McNeal-Williams, 20, of Center Point, was discovered unresponsive near the back door with gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced her dead at the scene at 12:30 p.m.
Rogers initially told responding officers that “someone tried to break into his home and he shot the person,” according to police reports. However, detectives quickly determined the shooting was domestic in nature and that McNeal-Williams was not attempting a burglary.
Investigators learned that Rogers and McNeal-Williams were in a relationship at the time of the shooting.
Rogers faces two charges: murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held without bond in the Jefferson County jail.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting continues. Police have not released additional details about what led to the fatal confrontation.
McNeal-Williams’ family has not yet issued a public statement regarding her death.
