Colorado Man Held on $1M Bond for Highway Road Rage Shooting

JEFFERSON COUNTY, CO – A 56-year-old Colorado man is being held on $1 million bond after allegedly shooting a woman in the head during a road rage incident on a busy highway.

Matthew Impellitari was arrested at the scene Tuesday evening and charged with four counts of attempted murder following the shooting on US Highway 285 in Jefferson County around 7 p.m.

According to court documents, the incident began when the driver of the victim’s vehicle had been passing slower-moving cars in the left lane and overtook a second vehicle. Moments later, shots rang out, striking a female passenger in the head. The driver heard two shots fired and attempted to follow the suspect’s vehicle but crashed on a rock.

The victim was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Deputy District Attorney Amanda Becker told the court: “It is a miracle [the victim] is still alive at this point.” The woman’s current condition has not been disclosed by authorities.

Deputies found Impellitari walking near the crash site shortly after the incident. His vehicle was later located parked behind a fence on his property. During the investigation, authorities discovered that surveillance footage from his home security system had been deleted between 6:57 and 7:10 p.m., a time frame that coincided with the shooting.

A search warrant executed at Impellitari’s residence revealed a handgun and magazines hidden on a mattress in the home. Records show Impellitari holds a valid concealed carry permit in Colorado, raising questions about how a licensed gun owner could allegedly use his weapon in such a violent manner.

A judge set bond at $1 million during Impellitari’s Friday court appearance, citing the severity of the crime and potential danger to the community. Prosecutors had requested the high bond, arguing that the unprovoked nature of the attack demonstrated a serious public safety risk.

Road rage incidents involving firearms have become an increasing concern for law enforcement across Colorado and the nation. The seemingly minor traffic interaction that allegedly triggered this shooting highlights the deadly potential of armed confrontations on roadways.

Impellitari’s next court date is scheduled for November 20. His defense attorney has not yet commented publicly on the case.

The incident occurred during evening rush hour on a heavily traveled stretch of Highway 285, a major corridor connecting Denver to mountain communities. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicles traveling at high speeds before the shooting occurred.

Investigators are continuing to piece together the exact sequence of events and whether any additional interactions occurred between the vehicles before shots were fired. The case has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of aggressive driving laws and greater awareness of road rage dangers.
