Florida Man Charged After Two Children Found Dead in Arson Fire

PENSACOLA, FL – A 27-year-old Escambia County man faces murder charges after authorities discovered two young children dead inside a burning mobile home Friday, with investigators determining the fire was deliberately set to cover up the crimes.

John Henry Walston, Jr. has been charged with two counts of premeditated murder, sexual assault on a victim under 12, arson, and animal cruelty in connection with the deaths of 9-year-old Vayden Orum and 7-year-old Rayden Smith. Both children were found deceased inside the Pensacola residence after firefighters extinguished the flames.

According to investigators, the children were already dead before the fire started. Authorities confirmed that one of the victims had been sexually assaulted prior to death, while the family dog was also found dead at the scene.

Walston fled the burning home and sought medical treatment at a local hospital, where he was subsequently taken into custody. A third child and an adult woman—identified as the mother of the two deceased children—were also injured in the incident.

The mother sustained injuries while attempting to rescue her children from the burning home and was transported to a Mobile Burn Center for treatment. The extent of her injuries and current condition have not been disclosed by authorities.

The stepfather of the victims expressed shock and grief over the tragedy. “How can you expect any human being to do this? Let alone an adult to two kids,” he told reporters.

Walston is currently being held without bond at the Escambia County Jail. His initial court appearance is scheduled for November 26, where he will face formal charges in the deaths of the two children.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the murders and arson. Officials have not disclosed the relationship between Walston and the victims or what may have motivated the alleged crimes.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are leading the investigation into the incident.
