LOS ANGELES, CA – A 19-hour-old infant was found deceased Monday night inside student housing near the University of Southern California campus, prompting an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers responded to the 3100 block of McClintock Avenue after receiving reports of a deceased infant at approximately 7:13 p.m. The child was pronounced dead at the scene inside USC’s Cardinal Gardens apartments, according to authorities.
The cause of death remains undetermined pending the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s findings. No arrests have been made in connection with the infant’s death.
Earlier that evening, around 5:56 p.m., Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to the same location for a 20-year-old woman experiencing difficulty breathing. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment, officials said.
Firefighters returned to the address approximately 90 minutes later for reports of an infant not breathing. Upon arrival, they discovered the newborn had already died.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the two medical emergency calls at the location are directly related, though the timing and proximity suggest a possible connection.
A Citizen app entry noted reports of a child left alone in an apartment around 6:50 p.m., though police have not verified this information or its relevance to the investigation.
USC’s Cardinal Gardens provides housing for graduate students and their families near the university’s main campus in South Los Angeles. University officials have not issued a public statement regarding the incident.
The LAPD’s investigation remains ongoing, with detectives working to determine the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. Authorities have not disclosed whether they are treating the case as suspicious or accidental.
No further details were immediately released as investigators continue to interview witnesses and review evidence from the scene.
