RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA – A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Monday afternoon while responding to a domestic violence call, and the suspect crashed his motorcycle during a high-speed pursuit before being apprehended, authorities said.
Deputy Andrew Nunez, a six-year veteran of the department, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after being shot in the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive. The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Angelo Jose Saldivar of San Bernardino, allegedly opened fire immediately when Nunez arrived at the scene.
Nunez was hit once and later declared dead at a local hospital. The fallen deputy leaves behind a wife, a 2-year-old daughter and another child on the way, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Following the shooting, Saldivar fled the scene on a motorcycle, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through the Inland Empire. During the pursuit, another vehicle struck Saldivar’s motorcycle, causing him to crash.
Saldivar is currently hospitalized but will be booked for murder upon his release, the Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday. The department has not disclosed the extent of his injuries or his expected release date.
The shooting occurred Monday afternoon when Nunez responded to the domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga, a city located in the western Inland Empire region of Southern California.
A fundraiser has been established for the Nunez family on the Peace Officers Research Association of California website to help with expenses and support his surviving family members.
The incident marks the latest in a series of deadly encounters between law enforcement officers and suspects across California. Officials have not disclosed what prompted the domestic violence call or whether anyone else was injured during the initial incident.
The investigation into the shooting and subsequent pursuit remains ongoing, with multiple agencies assisting the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
