Woman Gets Life Without Parole for Stabbing Toddler in Grocery Store Parking Lot

NORTH OLMSTED, OH – A judge sentenced a woman to life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally stabbing a 3-year-old boy who was sitting in a shopping cart outside a grocery store last year.

Bianca Ellis offered a brief apology during her sentencing hearing last week, telling the court, “I just want to say I apologize for what I did.” But Judge John Russo showed no leniency, handing down the maximum sentence for the brutal murder of Julian Wood and the attempted murder of his mother.

The horrific attack happened on June 3, 2024, in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle supermarket. Ellis had stolen a kitchen knife from a nearby Volunteers of America thrift store, then walked to the grocery store where she spotted Margot Wood loading groceries into her car with her young son.

Prosecutors convinced the jury that Ellis deliberately followed the mother and child out of the store before launching her attack. The 3-year-old suffered devastating injuries – his cheek was sliced open, his tongue was severed, and the knife punctured one of his lungs. Despite desperate efforts to save him, Julian died at St. John Medical Center.

During the trial, Ellis’s defense attorneys tried to argue she couldn’t be held fully responsible because of her long history of mental illness. A forensic psychiatrist testified that Ellis suffers from schizophrenia and experiences severe delusions, but said medication had made her competent enough to stand trial.

That argument didn’t sway the jury, especially after prosecutors pointed out that Ellis refused to take her prescribed medications while sitting in jail awaiting trial. The court heard testimony about her past psychiatric struggles, but jurors ultimately decided she knew what she was doing when she attacked a defenseless child.

Margot Wood delivered a powerful victim impact statement before sentencing, telling Ellis directly, “I hate you with every fiber of my being.” She described the unbearable pain of losing her youngest child and the trauma that will haunt her family forever.

Judge Russo acknowledged Ellis’s documented mental health problems but said they didn’t excuse what she did. He emphasized that premeditation was clear from the way she stole the knife, followed her victims, and carried out the attack in a calculated manner.

Ellis showed little emotion as the life sentence was handed down. She’ll spend the rest of her days behind bars with no chance of ever being released.
