BRONX, NY – A New York man is facing multiple charges after allegedly carrying out a brutal attack Wednesday that left his wife and 12-year-old stepdaughter severely injured.
Joshua Burnside, 28, stabbed his 31-year-old wife and her daughter at their Bronx apartment, according to law enforcement sources who spoke to the New York Daily News.
The attack began during an argument between Burnside and his wife. The woman grabbed a knife in self-defense, but Burnside allegedly took the weapon and used it to stab her in the stomach and slash her face.
After the woman fled the apartment, Burnside turned on the 12-year-old girl, who had witnessed the attack on her mother. He allegedly stabbed the child repeatedly across her body before retrieving a long screw and hammering it into the side of her skull, sources said.
Neighbors reported hearing the mother pounding on doors seeking help. “It was like four or five doors she pounded on. We came outside and she was bleeding from her abdomen,” a neighbor told News12. “Then once she started saying that there were kids there, that’s why he was like, ‘Oh my God,’ you know, you’re here, the kids are up there, what’s going on?”
Medical personnel who treated the girl discovered bruising on her head before finding the screw puncturing her brain, law enforcement sources told the Daily News. The child underwent surgery and remains in critical condition.
Burnside’s wife was hospitalized with minor injuries. Two other children, ages 2 and 5, were present in the home during the incident but were not injured.
Police arrested Burnside without incident. According to WNBC, he suffered an injury to his wrist during the altercation. Investigators observed bloody fingerprints on a sixth-floor door at the apartment building, which was also dented at the bottom, the New York Post reported.
Burnside faces charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child. His arraignment was scheduled for Friday.
