CAPE COD, MA – A woman died after being rescued from Naushon Island following a boat fire off the coast of Cape Cod, authorities confirmed Friday.
Cynthia Sullivan was identified as the victim who succumbed after escaping to the island along with her son and husband when their vessel caught fire in waters near the Massachusetts coastline.
The emergency unfolded when the family’s boat became engulfed in flames, forcing all three occupants to abandon ship and seek refuge on nearby Naushon Island, one of the Elizabeth Islands located off the southwestern coast of Cape Cod.
Rescue crews responded to the scene and transported Sullivan from the island, but she could not be saved. The circumstances of her death and whether she sustained injuries during the fire or the evacuation were not immediately disclosed by authorities.
Her son and husband also escaped to the island during the incident. Their conditions and whether they required medical treatment have not been reported.
Naushon Island is the largest and most well-known of the Elizabeth Islands, a chain of small islands that stretches from the southwestern tip of Cape Cod toward Martha’s Vineyard. The island is privately owned and largely inaccessible to the public.
The cause of the boat fire remains under investigation. Maritime authorities have not released details about the type of vessel involved or what may have sparked the blaze.
Boat fires can occur suddenly and spread rapidly due to the presence of fuel, electrical systems, and confined spaces. They represent one of the most dangerous emergencies boaters can face on the water.
The incident highlights the dangers of recreational boating and the unpredictable nature of maritime emergencies, even in the familiar waters off Cape Cod.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and Sullivan’s death. No additional information has been released at this time.
