Former NFL All-Pro Doug Martin Dies at 36

TAMPA BAY, FL – Former NFL All-Pro running back Doug Martin, known for his powerful running style during seven seasons in the league, has died at age 36, his family announced Sunday.

Martin’s family released a statement confirming his death Saturday morning, though the cause remains unconfirmed. “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said. “Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”

The news was first reported by TMZ on Sunday afternoon, citing a source with direct knowledge of the situation. Fox Sports reporter Greg Auman subsequently confirmed the family’s statement.

Martin played seven seasons in the National Football League, spending six years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and finishing his career with the Oakland Raiders in 2018.

The Boise State University product made history as the school’s first running back selected in the first round of the NFL draft when the Buccaneers chose him in 2012.

Despite standing just 5-foot-9, Martin earned the nickname “Muscle Hamster” for his bruising running style. He amassed 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns during his NFL career, along with contributions in the passing game.

His best professional season came in 2015 when he earned All-Pro honors. That year, Martin rushed for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns while adding 33 receptions for 271 yards and another score.

The performance helped cement his status as one of the Buccaneers’ most productive running backs during his tenure with the franchise. He was selected to the Pro Bowl multiple times during his career.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released a statement Sunday afternoon expressing their condolences. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the team said. “From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

The team noted that Martin was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements with the organization.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life,” the Buccaneers added.

Martin remained with Tampa Bay through the 2017 season before signing with Oakland for what would be his final year in professional football.
