RIVERSIDE, CA – A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred outside a grocery store in Riverside earlier this week, police announced Friday.
Edgar Rivera of Moreno Valley was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder following the October 13 incident. He is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center on $2 million bail.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 4:22 p.m. in the parking lot of a grocery store located in the 9200 block of Magnolia Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, Luis Gonzalez, 27, of Perris, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate lifesaving measures administered by officers and emergency medical personnel, Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Rivera and Gonzalez were known to each other, according to the Riverside Police Department. For reasons still under investigation, Rivera allegedly shot Gonzalez multiple times in front of the grocery store.
Rivera remained at the scene following the shooting and was arrested without incident when police arrived. Authorities have not disclosed what led to the confrontation or whether any witnesses observed the altercation that preceded the gunfire.
The Riverside Police Department has not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the deadly encounter. Investigators are working to determine a motive and piece together the events that resulted in Gonzalez’s death.
