Man Arrested for Starting Deadly LA Palisades Fire That Killed 12

LOS ANGELES, CA – A 29-year-old former Uber driver has been arrested for allegedly starting one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history, a blaze that claimed 12 lives and devastated communities in January.

Jonathan Rinderknecht was arrested near his Florida home on Tuesday and charged with “destruction of property by means of fire” in connection with the deadly Palisades Fire.

The fire, which was fully contained on January 31, began as what investigators call a “holdover” fire from the earlier Lachman Fire on New Year’s Day. Authorities now allege that Rinderknecht “maliciously” set the blaze that would spiral into one of LA’s worst fire disasters.

“A single person’s recklessness caused one of the worst fires Los Angeles has ever seen, resulting in death and widespread destruction,” said Bill Essayli, acting U.S. Attorney.

According to the investigation, Rinderknecht had just finished driving for Uber when he started the fire. Two passengers told investigators he appeared “agitated and angry” during their ride, raising questions about his state of mind.

After dropping off his passengers, Rinderknecht drove to Skull Rock Trailhead, where he took photos and listened to music before the fire began. Investigators believe he then intentionally set the blaze.

In a bizarre twist, Rinderknecht attempted to call 911 multiple times and eventually reported the fire himself. He later followed fire trucks to the scene and recorded videos of the destruction, behavior that investigators found suspicious and indicative of an arsonist returning to admire their handiwork.

The Palisades Fire tore through neighborhoods, destroying homes and forcing thousands to evacuate. The 12 victims who lost their lives included residents who were unable to escape the fast-moving flames and firefighters battling the inferno.

Uber confirmed that Rinderknecht was immediately removed from their platform after the company learned of his alleged involvement in starting the fire.

The case has shocked residents of Los Angeles, who endured weeks of fear and uncertainty as the fire raged. Many lost their homes and possessions, while others grapple with the trauma of evacuation and the loss of neighbors and loved ones.

Rinderknecht faces serious federal charges that could result in a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. The investigation into exactly how he started the fire and his motivations continues.

Fire officials have noted that California’s wildfire season has become increasingly dangerous due to drought conditions, high winds, and climate change. However, this case represents an alleged act of human malice rather than natural causes or accident.

The arrest brings some measure of closure to a community that has been seeking answers about how the devastating fire began. Survivors and victims’ families will likely play a role in any sentencing proceedings if Rinderknecht is convicted.

  1. Gee, the article doesn’t mention anything about California’s policy of not being able to clear land without permit after permit after permit to clear one’s own property of debris and overgrowth.
