Fatal Fire Claims One Life at University Park Student Housing

LOS ANGELES, CA – A fatal fire at an apartment building in the University Park neighborhood Tuesday afternoon claimed one life, authorities confirmed.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of a blaze on the second floor of a building at 2353 S. Portland Street around 2:10 p.m. Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames but made a tragic discovery during their initial search of the affected unit.

“While conducting a primary search during their fire attack, firefighters located a victim in the involved unit,” the department stated in a press release. “Unfortunately, the individual was beyond medical help and determined dead on scene.”

The address corresponds to off-campus housing frequently used by students attending the nearby University of Southern California. However, authorities have not yet confirmed whether the victim was affiliated with the university or if any students were present during the incident.

Fire investigators have launched an arson investigation, which is standard protocol for all fatal fires in Los Angeles. Officials emphasized that the investigation does not necessarily indicate suspicious circumstances but is a routine measure to determine the fire’s origin and cause.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the victim’s specific cause of death. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Witnesses reported seeing heavy smoke billowing from the second-story windows shortly before fire crews arrived. Several residents were evacuated from the building as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

“The response was quick, but the fire had already done significant damage to that unit,” said one neighbor who declined to be identified. “We’re all just devastated that someone lost their life.”

The fire was fully extinguished within 30 minutes of the department’s arrival, preventing it from spreading to adjacent units. Fire officials praised the quick response of crews for limiting the damage to a single apartment.

Residents of the building have been temporarily displaced while investigators examine the scene and assess structural damage. The American Red Cross has been contacted to provide assistance to those affected.

University Park, located adjacent to the USC campus, is home to thousands of students living in off-campus housing. The area has seen increased attention to fire safety in recent years following several incidents in older apartment buildings.

The investigation into the fire’s cause remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Arson Investigation Section.
