LOS ANGELES, CA – A suspect is in custody following a fatal shooting in downtown Los Angeles that left one person dead and prompted a tense standoff with police Monday afternoon.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in progress around 3:25 p.m. near 5th and Los Angeles streets. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Less than a half mile away, near 4th and Spring streets, officers located an armed suspect who initially refused to surrender. Video from the scene showed a heavy police presence as officers took cover behind patrol vehicles with weapons drawn.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody after police deployed less-lethal rounds. The man’s current condition has not been released by authorities.
Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. The relationship between the suspect and the victim, if any, remains unclear.
The Los Angeles Police Department has not released the identities of either the suspect or the victim pending notification of family members.
The area surrounding 5th and Los Angeles streets was temporarily closed to traffic during the investigation. The incident remains under active investigation.
