Florida Teen Fakes Kidnapping, Shoots Himself to Make Story Believable

MARION COUNTY, FL – A Florida teenager who sparked a massive search operation after claiming he was kidnapped has admitted to fabricating the entire story, even shooting himself in the leg to make his lie more convincing, authorities said.

Caden Speight, 17, sent his parents a text message claiming he had been abducted by four Hispanic men in a light-colored van, prompting Marion County Sheriff’s Office to activate an Amber Alert and launch an extensive search with air and ground units. The search mobilized significant law enforcement resources as authorities raced to locate the supposedly kidnapped teen.

Sheriff Billy Woods revealed that Speight had purchased bicycle and camping supplies at Walmart before “disappearing” to stage his elaborate hoax. In what authorities described as a shocking escalation, the teen shot himself in the leg “to continue the ruse” and lend credibility to his kidnapping story.

“There is ZERO chance that Caden’s gunshot wound came from any type of assailant,” Sheriff Woods stated emphatically, making clear the injury was self-inflicted.

The sheriff noted that investigators spotted “an alarming amount of red flags initially” during their investigation, which eventually led them to uncover the truth. The fabricated kidnapping diverted critical law enforcement resources while causing extreme distress to Speight’s family and the community.

“Caden simply rode away… while the rest of us were left to think the worst,” Sheriff Woods said, describing how the teenager’s actions affected everyone involved in the search.

Deputies are currently compiling evidence to determine what charges Speight will face for the hoax. Authorities say Speight’s parents have refused to allow him to speak with detectives since the truth emerged.

The incident highlights the serious consequences of fabricating crimes, which can result in criminal charges for filing false police reports, misusing emergency alert systems, and wasting law enforcement resources. False kidnapping reports are treated particularly seriously due to the urgent response they trigger and the resources they consume.

Marion County authorities have not disclosed a motive for why Speight staged the elaborate hoax, and the investigation into potential charges remains ongoing.
