Florida Man Charged After Killing, Cooking Neighbor’s Peacocks

PASCO COUNTY, FL – A 61-year-old Florida man faces animal cruelty charges after authorities say he killed two peacocks that roamed his neighborhood, then cooked and ate them to spite a neighbor who had been feeding the birds.

Craig Vogt was arrested September 23 following an investigation into the deaths of the peacocks, which had been regular visitors to the residential area. According to arrest records, Vogt had an ongoing dispute with a neighbor who regularly fed the birds in the area.

Deputies say Vogt had previously threatened to kill the peacocks if the neighbor continued feeding them. The situation escalated when Vogt allegedly followed through on his threat, writing a letter to the neighbor admitting he had killed the birds.

During questioning by law enforcement, Vogt reportedly provided detailed descriptions of how he killed the peacocks. He told investigators he decapitated the birds, allowed them to bleed out, then cooked them in a frying pan. Vogt stated he killed the peacocks “to prove a point” and acted out of spite toward his neighbor.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office charged Vogt with aggravated cruelty to animals. Deputies noted that when arrested, Vogt allegedly threatened to kill additional peacocks in the neighborhood to prevent anyone else from caring for them.

Peacocks are common in many Florida neighborhoods, where they roam freely and are often fed by residents. While the birds are not native to Florida, they have established populations in several counties and are generally protected under state animal cruelty laws.

Vogt was taken to the Pasco County Jail and held on $25,000 bond. Court records indicate he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in October.

Neighbors who spoke to local media expressed shock at the incident, saying the peacocks had been part of the community for years. Animal control officers have increased patrols in the area following the arrest.

The case highlights ongoing tensions in Florida communities where peacocks roam freely, with some residents viewing them as neighborhood attractions while others consider them nuisances due to their loud calls and property damage.
