SOUTHPORT, NC – Three people were killed and five others wounded Saturday night when a gunman opened fire from a boat into a crowded waterfront bar, authorities said.
The suspect, identified as Marcus Thompson, 34, of Wilmington, was arrested at the scene after allegedly firing multiple rounds into the American Fish Company restaurant from his motorboat, Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram said.
The shooting occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. as dozens of patrons were enjoying dinner and drinks at the popular dock-front establishment overlooking the Cape Fear River.
“The suspect pulled his boat alongside the restaurant’s outdoor deck and began firing indiscriminately into the crowd,” Ingram said at a Sunday morning news conference. “This was a senseless act of violence against innocent people.”
Witnesses described chaos as diners dove for cover behind tables and rushed inside the restaurant when the gunfire erupted. Several patrons called 911 while others attempted to help the wounded.
“I heard what sounded like firecrackers, then people started screaming,” said witness Jennifer Mills, who was dining with her family. “We saw people falling and blood everywhere. It was terrifying.”
The three victims who died were identified as Robert Hayes, 45, of Southport; Linda Martinez, 52, of Oak Island; and David Chen, 38, of Wilmington. The five wounded victims were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where two remain in critical condition.
Thompson was subdued by restaurant patrons and an off-duty police officer before surrendering to arriving deputies. He has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.
Investigators said Thompson appeared to have targeted the restaurant specifically but have not determined a motive. Sheriff’s officials said he had no known connection to the victims or the establishment.
“We’re still trying to piece together why this happened,” said Detective Captain Sarah Wilson. “The suspect is cooperating with investigators, but we haven’t established a clear motive.”
Thompson was being held without bond at the Brunswick County Detention Center pending a Monday court appearance. Court records show he has no prior criminal history.
The American Fish Company, a longtime fixture in Southport’s historic downtown district, remained closed Sunday as investigators processed the crime scene. Owner Mike Rodriguez said the restaurant would likely remain closed for several days.
Southport Mayor Julie Novak called for unity in the wake of the tragedy and praised the quick response of law enforcement and emergency medical personnel.
“Our community is heartbroken by this senseless violence,” Novak said. “We will come together to support the victims’ families and help our town heal.”
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
