AURORA, CO – A female motorcyclist died Thursday afternoon following a four-vehicle crash that shut down a major interstate corridor through Aurora for more than two hours during the evening commute.
The collision occurred at 2:53 p.m. on northbound Interstate 225 near Smith Road, creating a massive traffic backup as emergency crews worked to clear the scene. Aurora police immediately closed all northbound lanes between Colfax Avenue and Interstate 70 while investigators examined the wreckage.
Emergency responders rushed the injured motorcyclist to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, but she succumbed to her wounds shortly after arrival. Authorities haven’t released the victim’s identity pending notification of her family members. No other motorists involved in the crash sustained injuries, according to police reports.
The crash created a traffic nightmare for afternoon commuters as vehicles backed up for miles along the busy interstate corridor. Drivers sat motionless in their cars while some abandoned their vehicles to walk along the highway shoulder. Police directed traffic onto surface streets, but those quickly became overwhelmed with diverted vehicles.
Officers kept the interstate closed for over two hours as crash reconstruction specialists documented the scene and tow trucks cleared damaged vehicles. The northbound lanes finally reopened at 4:45 p.m., though residual delays continued well into the evening as traffic patterns slowly returned to normal.
Aurora police haven’t released details about what caused the multi-vehicle collision or whether speed, weather conditions, or driver impairment played any role. Investigators are reviewing traffic camera footage and interviewing witnesses who saw the crash unfold. The department’s traffic investigation unit typically takes several weeks to complete reports on fatal crashes.
This latest motorcycle fatality adds to a troubling pattern of serious crashes along Colorado’s Front Range highways. The Denver metropolitan area has seen multiple fatal motorcycle accidents in recent months, prompting safety advocates to call for increased awareness campaigns as riding season continues through the fall weather.
The stretch of I-225 where Thursday’s crash occurred has been the site of several serious accidents this year. The highway serves as a major north-south connector for eastern metro Denver, carrying thousands of commuters daily between residential areas and employment centers.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area to contact the Aurora Police Department’s traffic investigation unit. The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.
