Tesla Forced to Redesign Door Handles After Drivers Trapped in Cars

DETROIT, MI – Tesla’s futuristic door handles are getting an emergency makeover after multiple owners reported being trapped inside their vehicles, forcing some to smash windows to escape when the electronic locks failed.

The electric car maker’s chief designer confirmed the company is scrambling to combine electronic and manual door releases into a single button following a federal safety probe and damning reports of passengers unable to exit their vehicles during emergencies.

Nine terrified Tesla owners filed official complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describing harrowing experiences when their car’s electronic door locks stopped working. In four cases, desperate drivers had to break their own windows to escape their high-tech prisons.

“We’re working on combining everything into one button because it makes a lot of sense,” chief designer Franz von Holzhausen told reporters, acknowledging the current system’s dangerous flaws. The admission comes after NHTSA launched a formal investigation Tuesday into the door handle failures.

The problem strikes at the heart of Tesla’s design philosophy—sleek, futuristic touches that sometimes sacrifice practicality for aesthetics. When the car’s battery dies or loses power, the electronic locks become useless, leaving occupants scrambling to find manual releases that are often hidden and difficult to access.

One owner described the panic of being locked inside their $80,000 vehicle as smoke began filling the cabin after a minor electrical issue. They couldn’t find the manual release in time and had to kick out a window, suffering cuts that required stitches.

The crisis has attracted international attention, with Chinese regulators already pressuring automakers to reconsider fully concealed door handles that prioritize appearance over safety. The controversy adds to Tesla’s mounting quality control issues that have plagued the company despite its market dominance.

Current Tesla owner’s manuals do include instructions for using external power sources to activate dead electronic locks, but critics argue that’s little comfort to someone trapped inside a vehicle during an emergency. The manual releases exist but are so well-hidden that many owners don’t even know they’re there until it’s too late.

Von Holzhausen refused to provide a timeline for the redesign, leaving current Tesla owners wondering how long they’ll have to live with potentially dangerous door handles. The company’s silence on implementation dates has frustrated safety advocates who argue lives are at stake.

The door handle debacle represents another black eye for Tesla as it struggles to maintain its reputation for innovation while addressing basic safety concerns that traditional automakers solved decades ago.
