LONE TREE, CO – A 33-year-old man is facing murder charges after authorities discovered a woman’s body during a welfare check at a residential complex last week.
Police took Troy Marcus Reynolds Jr. into custody Friday morning on multiple charges including first-degree murder in connection with the death of 57-year-old Kathleen Mayo. The arrest came nine days after officers found Mayo’s body at a residence on Park Meadows Drive during a routine welfare check on September 4.
Reynolds faces an extensive list of charges beyond the murder accusation. Authorities have also charged him with burglary, animal cruelty, menacing, and tampering with physical evidence. The combination of charges suggests a complex crime scene that investigators spent more than a week processing.
The Lone Tree Police Department has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the case, citing the ongoing nature of their investigation. Officials haven’t released details about how Mayo died, what led to the welfare check, or the relationship between the victim and the suspect.
The arrest marks the conclusion of an intensive investigation that began when officers made the grim discovery during what started as a routine check on Mayo’s wellbeing. Welfare checks are typically requested by concerned family members, friends, or neighbors when someone hasn’t been heard from for an unusual period.
Reynolds is currently being held at the Douglas County Detention Facility. Court records indicate he’s scheduled for his first appearance before a judge early next week, where formal charges will be presented and bail conditions discussed.
The animal cruelty charge included in Reynolds’ arrest warrant adds another disturbing element to the case, though police haven’t specified what happened to any pets that may have been at the residence.
Mayo’s death has shaken the typically quiet Lone Tree community, a Denver suburb known for its low crime rates and family-friendly atmosphere. Neighbors in the Park Meadows Drive area expressed shock at the violent crime occurring in their neighborhood.
