HOUSTON, TX – An 11-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being shot while playing ding dong ditch with friends at an apartment complex Sunday evening, according to local authorities.
The child was participating in the popular childhood prank game around 8:30 p.m. when someone opened fire from inside one of the apartment units, hitting the boy in the torso. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries hours later.
Houston police say the shooting happened at a residential complex in the southeast part of the city. The boy was with several other children who were taking turns ringing doorbells and running away – a harmless game known as ding dong ditch that’s been played by kids for generations.
Witnesses told investigators they heard multiple gunshots coming from inside an apartment after the children knocked on doors. The other kids managed to flee the scene unharmed, but the 11-year-old was struck by at least one bullet.
“This is absolutely heartbreaking,” said a police spokesperson during a Monday morning briefing. “An innocent child lost his life while simply playing with friends. There’s no justification for this level of violence against kids.”
Detectives are reviewing security footage from the apartment complex and interviewing residents who may have witnessed the incident. They’re also speaking with the victim’s friends who were present during the shooting.
The shooter hasn’t been identified or arrested yet, though police say they’re following several leads. They’re asking anyone with information about the case to come forward immediately.
This tragic incident highlights growing concerns about gun violence affecting children in Houston, where several young people have been killed or injured in shootings this year. Community leaders are calling for increased safety measures and better conflict resolution.
The boy’s family is devastated by the loss, according to neighbors who knew them. A makeshift memorial with flowers and stuffed animals has appeared near the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
Police are treating this as a homicide investigation and expect to make an arrests soon. They’re urging residents to contact authorities with any information that might help solve the case.

NOT a ‘harmless prank’ as this incident demonstrates.
Was the shooting ‘justified’ in any way, probably not. OTOH with the growing number of residential attacks/invasions, sometimes with people pretending to be LE, there is a concern that things can easily go drastically wrong as in this case. Then again the people that shot thru the door were just following the ‘sage’ advice from a former president.
No matter the final outcome. multiple lives have forever been changed.
