PEMBROKE, NY – A day trip to one of America’s most famous tourist spots turned deadly when a tour bus carrying 52 people crashed on a New York highway, killing five passengers and injuring dozens more.
The bus was heading back from Niagara Falls when witnesses saw it lose control and flip over on Thursday afternoon, about 40 miles from the popular tourist destination. The accident happened near the small town of Pembroke, roughly 30 miles east of Buffalo.
Most of the passengers were tourists from India, China, and the Philippines who’d been enjoying what should’ve been a memorable sightseeing trip. Instead, some were thrown from the vehicle during the violent crash, while others got trapped inside the wreckage for hours as emergency crews worked frantically to free them.
Police say the vast majority of passengers weren’t wearing seat belts when the bus went down, which likely made the injuries much worse. It’s a sobering reminder that even on what seems like a routine tour, safety gear can mean the difference between life and death.
