MEXICO CITY, Mexico – The unexpected death of popular Mexican social media influencer Denisse Reyes, 27, following a liposuction procedure in Chiapas has sparked scrutiny over the use of unauthorized medical clinics.
Reyes underwent the cosmetic surgery at San Pablo Medical Clinic. The procedure involved administration of an intravenous medication by Dr. Orlando Gamboa, according to reports. However, complications began when Reyes reportedly had a severe reaction to the medication, leading to cardiac arrest.
“She began feeling unwell and experienced a cardiac arrest, prompting her to be moved from the clinic’s procedure room,” stated Ammao Rodriguez, Reyes’ uncle. Despite efforts to save her life, Reyes was pronounced dead after being transferred to Manzur Hospital shortly thereafter.
Reyes, who had no known pre-existing health conditions, leaves behind an eight-year-old son. Her family, now seeking accountability, has vowed to pursue legal action against Dr. Gamboa, questioning his involvement in the surgery’s tragic outcome.
“Justice for Denisse must be served, and the responsible party should be held accountable,” Rodriguez emphasized. Authorities in Chiapas are reportedly involved in investigating the incident.
This is not the first time Dr. Gamboa has faced accusations. In December 2024, he was linked to another case involving the death of a woman following a similar procedure, though he denies involvement in Reyes’ case.
The influencer, who gained notoriety on Mexican social media platforms in 2022, is remembered fondly by her family. Her sister, Massiel Reyes, expressed deep sorrow on social media, remembering her as a spirited and driven individual. “You lived life to the fullest… What has happened is heartbreaking,” Massiel wrote online.
As friends and followers mourn her loss, Denisse Reyes’ death raises questions about the oversight of medical practices in unauthorized clinics and the consequences that can arise from such procedures.
